Merle V. Gerry (1923-2009)

Waterloo, Iowa - Merle V. Gerry, 86, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Dec. 12, at Allen Hospital.

He was born March 6, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Horace E. and Mabel Usher Gerry. He married Grace E. Stuber on March 10, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. She died Dec. 6, 1992.

Mr. Gerry graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1941 and retired in 1982 after 41 years with John Deere as a journeyman test technician in experimental engineering. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific theater. He had been volunteering with the Grout Museum since 2001, where he began in the catalog and collection department, organized the Black Hawk County B-29 bomber veterans of World War II information and was working on the research and catalog of World War II Iowa prisoners of war for the Grout's Five Sullivan Brothers Veterans Museum and Research Center.

He is survived by a daughter, Ann (David) Latusick of Waterloo; two stepsons, Ronald E. (Lucrettia) Stuber of Waterloo and James (Janis) Stuber of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Buchan of Charles City; and a brother, Harold (Marilyn) Gerry of Zellwood, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson, Robert C. Stuber; a grandson, Scott C. Stuber; and two brothers, Milo F. and Robert in infancy.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Grout Museum or Cedar Bend Humane Society.
