Hiram Wagar Dead

Hiram Wagar died at his home in this city Monday morning of this week at 8 o’clock a. m. in the 64th year of his age, after a short.
Mr. Wagar was born in Easton township, Washington county, New York in September 1820, moving with his parents to Kalamazoo county, Michigan where he lived and worked on his father’s farm on Prairie Round until the spring of 1849, at which time he joined an expedition bound overland for California under the supervision and conducted by Mr. Parker. On their arrival in California he engaged in mining for a short time, afterwards engaging in the lumber business near Portland, where he remained about 20 years. He then returned home on a visit to the old home in home in Michigan, and on his return trip set money with his brother Harvey, of Geneseo township with which to purchases land in this vicinity, which resulted in his purchasing the Wagar farm of 240 acres in Eagle township in this county. After settling his business in Oregon Mr. Wagar returned to this place and engaged in improving his farm where he lived up to the time of his removal to this city about seven years ago.
He was married to Miss Winifred Humphries in Eagle township about one year after his return to Iowa, with whom he lived and enjoyed the trust of a happy, peaceful and contented life up to the time of Mrs. Wagar’s death in this city on July 1, 1889, since which time Mr. Wagar has not been himself. Being naturally of a jovial disposition it was a noticeable fact that he had been very despondent since his wife’s death, and it is believed by those who knew him best that this despondency broth about his premature death. Two children were born to them, one son, Clarence, and the daughter, Lottie, both of whom still reside in this city. Besides the two children Mr. Wagar leaves a brother Harvey Wagar, who resides on his farm in Geneseo township, Tama county, another brother, Albert, who resides on the old homestead originally bought by the father in 1836, in Kalamazoo county, Michigan and two sisters, Mrs. Crooks and Mrs. Boylan, both of who reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to mourn their loss.
Mr. Wagar was always of a thoughtful disposition, deliberate, and an opinion once formed was not easily overcome by those who opposed him. He was a fond and living husband and father always watchful of the interest of those who were near and dear to him. He was an exemplary citizen, always interested in the public welfare, performing such duties as fell to him with the justness and perception which marked his character.
The funeral services were held at the residence, conducted by the Rev. S. E. Koons, after which the remains were conveyed to Geneseo cemetery, Tama county and place beside those of his deceased wife, in their final resting place.
