Raymond D. Steere
CEDAR FALLS –Funeral services for Raymond D. Steere will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo, with military graveside rites performed by the Amvets Post 49 of Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo, and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
Mr. Steere, 79, died of natural causes Friday afternoon, June 20, 1997, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
He was born, Dec. 16, 1917, in Greene, the son of John and Viola Barth Steere. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, and received a bronze Battle Star. On June 21, 1942, he married Ruth Eckhoff in Nashua. Mr. Steere was retired from John Deere where he had been in the shipping department for 40 years. He was a 50-year member of both the Amvets and American Legion Posts in Cedar Falls, a lifetime member of the University of Northern Iowa's Accounting Advisory Council, and served on the church board for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, also of the Lutheran Home; one son, Kevin of Issaquah, Wash.; one daughter, Sonja Gosse of Oelwein; six sisters, Velma Hagenow of Cedar Falls, Donna Craft of Waverly, Yvonne Faust of Waterloo, Irva Bruns of Waverly, Myrna Reeder of Orlando, Fla., and Norma Klemz of Waterloo; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale; one sister, Mavis Clayton; and infant brother, Clare.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Home, St. John's Lutheran Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
