John Calvin Cannon was born in 1820, died in 1897. He's my G-g-g-grandfather. His dad, William, was the older brother of Horace Cannon, who was an infant when his parents (Samuel and Mary Porteous Cannon) died within a week of each other. Horace became the father of Joseph Gurney Cannon, Speaker of the House in the late 19th-early 20th century.

I looked up some militia rosters for the War of 1812 and William Cannon was on them for a couple of the North Carolina militia units.
