Wilhelmina Ernestina Tremmel,
oldest daughter of Ludwig and
Bertha Bartelt, was born in Pom-
eru, Germany, December 12th,
1850. The early years of her life
were spent in the little German
village of Langenhagen where, at
the age of 14, she was confirmed
in the Lutheran church.

She was twenty-two when she,
with her parents, emigrated to the
United States and settled in Iowa
county, Iowa. Here, two years
later, she was married to Fred
Tremmel. For more than forty-
five years they met the varying vi-
cissitudes of life together with ever-
increasing devotion and the be-
reaved husband sustains an irrep-
arable loss in her death.

They came to Audubon county,
locating on a farm northeast of
Exira in 1880, and have lived in
and near Exira ever since. The
forty years spent in this commu-
nity were replete with innumer-
able deeds of Christian love and
ministry, and many a young wife
and mother, many a family in ad-
versity and distress, will miss her
kindly council and loving service.
"A good neighbor" everyone called
her and a higher encomium could
not be given.

She was for many years promi-
nently related to the work of the
Congregational church of which
she was a member and the people
of that fellowship will know the
sincerity of her Christian experience.

Her last illness began August
29th. An operation the following
day was, perhaps, the only hope of
saving her life, but the weight of
many years and a body worn out
in service for others made recovery
impossible and she passed away
on the 11th. She was 69 years,
9 months and 2 days of age when
death came.

Louis and Fred Bartelt of Coon
Rapid and Sioux City are brothers
and Mrs. Charlie Klever of Exira
is a sister. With them the entire
community joins in a common sor-
row. The funeral was conducted
from the Community church, Rev.
Henry officiating. Interment was
made in the Exira cemetery.
