Youth Drowned
In Mississippi

Loses Life When
Skiff Upset

Claude A. Bartholow, Jr., 28, a
former Audubon youth and son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bartholow of
Audubon, drowned Tuesday in the
Mississippi river at Quincy, Ill.,
where he was working on a gov-
ernment project.

Young Bartholow, who with his
wife had visited his parents Sun-
day, was in a work skiff on the
river when the accident occurred.
The skiff upset and sank, throw-
ing Bartholow and three others in
the river. According to reports,
Bartholow became panic stricken
and failed to clutch a plank a
companion extended to him. The
othere succeeded in making the
shore.

He was a graduate of the
Audubon high school and the
University of Iowa. He lived for
a number of years in Gray, where
the elder Bartholow was superin-
tendent of schools. Later when his
father became county engineer, he
attended the Audubon high school
and was graduated in 1927. He was
married four years ago after com-
pleting the course in electrical en-
gineering at the University of
Iowa, and lived at Iowa City for
a time before joining the U S.
Engineering corps.

He was employed as a sub-
surveyman and was one of 215
field men at work on the project
along the Mississippi.

The parents were notified of his
tragic death Tuesday afternoon
and left at once for Iowa City
where the body will be brought by
the widow. Funeral services will
probably be held there.

Surviving besides the widow
and aprents(parents) are two brothers and
three sisters.

Note: Parents were Claude Alpheus Bartholow and Ethelwin L. Willey. Claude Jr.'s wife was Gladys Stine.
