Lloyd Crees, four years old and
one of six children in the Milton
Crees family, was drowned late
Friday afternoon in a barrel of wa-
ter while playing in the yard at
his home, two miles north of here.

Lloyd had been out playing with
his younger sister, Geneva, while
the other Crees children were at
school. Mrs. Crees had noticed for
some time that the child was not
around the house, but thought he
had gone to a nearby field where
his father was husking corn.

The tragedy was not discovered
until about 4 o'clock when Mr.
Crees came in from the field. He
was alone and had not seen the
child. A search of the farmyard
was started, and the body of the
tot was found submerged in the
barrel which was used to soak
oats as a hog feed.

Beside the barrel stood a pail
turned upside (d)own, upon which the
child had climbed to look into the
container. It is believed he lost
his footing and tumbled headlong
into the barrel.

The parents summoned Dr. R.
H. Payne from Exira, Hans John-
son, county coroner, and Sheriff
Fred C. Clemmensen were called.
It was agreed that the death was
accidental.

Lloyd, whose fourth birthday
was next Tuesday, was the only
boy in the family. Besides his
parents he is survived by five sis-
ters, Naomi, Mary, Ramona, Ruby
and Geneva. The Crees family re-
sides on the Frank Spoo farm,
directly north of this place.

Funeral services were conduct-
ed Sunday at the Presbyterian
church in Audubon at 2:30 o'clock
with the Rev. Paul Parker officiat-
ing. Burial was in the Arlington
Heights cemetery.
