John Bruner, of Exira, died at his home Friday afternoon, January 16, 1903. Mr. Bruner had reached the age of 81 years, 7 months and 30 days. He was born in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, May 17, 1821, and moved to Putnam County, Indiana, in his boyhood days where he was afterward married to Susanna Wright in 1841. They moved to Champaign County, Illinois, where his wife died. He afterwards married Mrs. Eliza Wright who still survives him. He was the father of eight children, three of whom are living, Perry Bruner of this vicinity and one son and one daughter in Wyoming. He has been for many years a resident of this county and has lived a life which is worthy of imitation and he will be remembered as a much respected citizen. He became a member of the Christian church in his early life and for more than fifty years his life was spent in the service of the Lord. Uncle John was one of the earliest settlers of this county, coming here more than forty years ago, and taking up his abode on a farm down in the Natty Hamlin Grove which he continued to occupy for many years, during which time he served as postmaster assisted by his daughter, Harriet Bruner now Mrs. Worth Early of Wyoming, and only left the old homestead when falling years and failing health compelled him to move to Exira, and seek a quieter mode of life. Several of the relatives were at the bedside when the final end came, among them being his son, Perry Bruner, Mrs. Sam Minser, W. R. Bruner, A. J. Bruner, Mrs. Sherm Humphrey of Audubon, and Mrs. James Zike, of Carson. His son, Henry Bruner was way out in Wyoming and unable to be present, as also was his daughter Mrs. Worth Early. The funeral services were held at his home Sunday at 11 a. m., conducted by his pastor, Elder E. C. Whitaker, pastor of the Christian Church, after which all that is earthly were laid to rest in the Exira Cemetery, there to await the call of the judgment day.
