Well Known Exira Man Succumbed Following Long Illness
John William Wissler, well known Exira man, died at his home early Sunday morning. Mr. Wissler had been in ill health for some years and bedfast since last February. He was 79 years old.
He was born April 8, 1860, in Circleville, Ohio, the son of Jonathan William and Elizabeth Schnellbacher Wissler, and came to Iowa with his parents in a covered wagon when he was eight years old. The family located near Winterset, where he grew to manhood. In 1895 he came to Exira to reside with his brother, Henry Wissler, who at that time was minister of the Congregational church. He was married to Ida Louisa Bruner November 12, 1899, and had been a resident of Exira since.
Surviving are the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Wilbur Seubert and Miss Gladys Wissler, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. Carl Bridgeman of Denver, Colorado, and one son, Ross, who attends Iowa State college at Ames.
Mr. Wissler became a member of the Evangelical church at an early age. Upon establishing his residence in Exira he became a member of the Congregational church to which he gave active and devoted loyalty.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock at the Exira Federated church, the Rev. Martin Fouts officiating. Interment was in the Exira cemetery. Pallbearers were Ben Jensen, Harry Nailor, Alfred Baker, Elmer Wolf, Earl Frederick and Clair Gipple.
Music for the service was furnished by a mixed quartet comprised of Lloyd Klever, Mrs. Maud Oldaker, Mrs. Eula Spoo and O. W. Masching, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Beulah Stone. They sang, "Going Down the Valley," "Beautiful Isle" and "Abide With Me."
