William H. E. Butlin, Formerly of
Exira, Dies In New York----------
We are in receipt of a communica-
tion from Byron E. Butlin of East
Aurora, New York, who, after an ab-
cense of twenty-three years, visited
our city in 1921. In his letter Mr. But-
lin tells of the death of his father,
William H. E. Butlin, who will be re-
membered by many old timers as
well as the younger class here as a
man of God's own liking--a sincere,
devoted Christian. The obituary fol-
lows:William Henry Edward Butlin, a
resident of East Aurora for more than
half a century, died at his home on
Oakwood avenue, Saturday at 9:25
a. m., March 27. He was born in Buf-
falo, N. Y., January 1, 1845, and in
1852 went to England with his par-
ents, remaining there until the fall of
1859, when they returned to America,
and soon after settled on a farm on
Oleam street just outside the Village
of East Aurora, N. Y., where he spent
most of his life, excepting from 1883
to 1889, when he lived in Exira, Iowa.He left the farm in 1909, moving
into the Village where he has since
lived. Mr. Butlin was married to
Lydia C. Pratt, June 25, 1873?. To
them were born seven children, Byron
E. Butlin of East Aurora, N. Y.; Char-
lotte C. Adams of Griffins Millo, N. Y.;
William S. Butlin, E. Aurora, N. Y.;
Henry P. Butlin, Rochester, N. Y.;
Mary T. Butlin, E. Aurora, N. Y.;
Ruth D. Bodiner, Seattle, Wash.; Ly-
dia C. Ingalls, Portland, Ore.There are eleven grand children liv-
ing. His wife, Lydia C. Pratt Butlin,
passed away on February 20, 1889.
His children, Mary T. Butlin passed
away August 12, 1882, and William
S. Butlin on December 3, 1921.On June 13, 1893, he was married to
Dina Davison, who survives him. Ger-
trude Alice Butlin was born to this
union on June 1, 1895, and passed
away in infancy August 28 the same
year. He was converted at the age of
nine years. He has been a member
of the Methodist Episcopal church of
E. Aurora for about sixty-six years,
where he has served as superinten-
dent of the Sunday school at different
times for a great many years. For
over thirty years he was treasurer of
the church, and also served as trea-
surer of the building fund. He was a
member of the board of Trustees, of
the Council of Benovolence, of the
Finance Committee, District Steward
Custodian of church papers, and was
a teacher of the adult ladies class in
Sunday school until his death.The funeral services were conduc-
ted by Rev. J. B. Harvey, from the
home, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock and from the M. E. church
at 3:00 o'clock. The pall bearers were,
Byron E. Butlin, Henry P. Butlin,
C. J. Rosen, T. E. Milsker, E. E. God-
frey, H. D. Andrew. The honorary
pall bearers were Trustees and Stew-
ards of the church. Burial was in
Oakwood cemetery, East Aurora, New
York.
