PIONEER RESIDENT
THIS COUNTY DIES

---------
Death Takes Man Who Had
Lived in County Nearly
Half a Century

----------

Soren Christen Nelsen, native of
Denmark, and well known man of
Audubon county, died at 11:45 Sunday
night at his home three miles south
of Oakfield, where he had lived for
40 years. Death was due to a com-
plication of troubles with which he
had been ill for a year, and bedfast
six months.

Deceased was born in Denmark,
June 4, 1858. On December 5, 1876
in Denmark, he was married to Annie
Marie Bertelsen and in May 1885
they came to America. He was a live-
long member of the Danish Lutheran
church.

His wife died a number of years
ago, and he is survived by 7 children,
Katie B. Nelsen at home, Chris A.
Nelsen of Audubon, Bertel A. Jensen,
R.F.D. 4, Atlantic, Mrs. T. M. Soren-
sen, Exira, Sidney C. Nelsen, Brayton,
Mrs. C. M. Lambert, Council Bluffs,
and William A. Nelsen of Brayton.

Funeral services were held Wednes-
day afternoon, a short service at the
home preceding the one at the Oak-
hill church west of town. Burial was
in the Oakhill cemetery.

The deceased was one of the pio-
neers of Audubon county, settling on
the land while it was mostly prairie
and timber. With indomitable cour-
age he overcame the difficulties in
the early day of clearing and break-
ing up of the land as a means of sup-
porting his family. He has been a
subscriber to The Journal ever since
the paper started. He was a good
husband and father, and always took
an active interest in the welfare of
the community.
