ELK HORN, Ia, Jan. 3 - Explosion of a gasoline blowtorch which they were using while installing a furnace at the home of James Carlsen caused the death of Chris Petersen, hardware dealer, and the serious burning of Soren Jensen. The accident occurred at 4:30 o'clock yesterday.

The clothes were burned entirely off Petersen by the flames which enveloped him. Jensen was seriously burned about the upper part of his body and face. Mr. Petersen lived a few hours, suffering intensely from his burns. Jensen was taken to the Atlantic hospital. He will recover.

Petersen was engaged in the hardware business in Elk Horn. His parents reside near here and are wealthy farmers. A younger brother of Petersen died recently at a hospital in Atlantic.

The two were at work installing a furnace in the home of James Carlsen. They were working in the basement when a leak in the blowtorch caused the gasoline to explode. The explosion threw the burning gasoline over the two men. The clothes were entirely burned off Petersen. He lived only a few hours.
