Here's a link to an early history of Appanoose County, from the Appanoose county home page on the web.

I'm quite sure the area now called Appanoose COunty was always part of Iowa, at least from the time settlers arrived in the mid-1840's. 1850 was the first census.

There was a special census of Appanoose County in 1856. Here's a link to that.

Pre-1850, all I have found are land records from the Bureau of Land Management, but I have never found those of much use except to know that someone is living in a place as of a certain date. There's no family information.
