Appanoose County pre 1850

Can someone tell me what Appanoose County was pre 1850? It is Appanoose County in 1850 but isn't there in 1840. What is this area of the country called? Was it Missouri or Indian Territory? What census and county would I need to continue searching this area in 1840? Thank you for any help.
