The Appanoose County newspaper archive site doesn't go back that far.

http://centerville.advantage-preservation.com/search/site

Without that, unless someone has family stories passed down through the generations from that date and place, it's going to be hard to find out. Local outbreaks of diseases of various types weren't uncommon.

The Indians were long gone from Appanoose County by then, having given up Iowa in 1843 or so. The tribes that had been there were the Sac and Fox tribes. The Sioux were further north and west: Minnesota and the Dakotas.
