Gaughenbaugh, Malsenia Jones Oct 7,1926 The Frontier
Malsenia Jones was born in Macon Co, Missouri, Dec 22,1832, passed away at the home of her son, James, south of Emmet, Sept 30,1926. When she was 10 years old she moved with her parents to Appanoose Co, Iowa, being among the first to settle in that country. She was living in Iowa when the Mormons went through on their way to Salt Lake City.
In March 1859, she was married to Moses Gaughenbaugh. She was the mother of 7 boys; Fordice who died in 1882; Curtis who died in 1909; George who passed away Aug 28,1926; Those living are Isaac of Centerville, Iowa; John of Emmet; Clark of Atkinson; James of Emmet. In 1863 her husband enlisted as a soldier in the Union army and served for 18 months, leaving her with four small children to care for.
She joined the Methodist Church in 1866 and lived a constant Christian life with great faith for the future life. In 1884 she moved with her husband and family to Holt County, where she lived until her death, Sept 30,1926, at the age of 93 years 9 month 8 days. Her husband passed away July 17,1903. She was ever moving with the frontier helping to settle and establish a new community. She leaves to mourn her death, four sons, and one brother, Austin Jones of Rathbun, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at Emmet, on Saturday, Oct 2nd at ten o'clock and the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in Prospect Hill cemetery at O'Neill.

BRIEF OBITUARIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE ENDED EARTH'S PILGRIMAGE
The grim reaper has cut down two of our venerable pioneers and much esteemed citizens, and the bodies of Moses Gaughenbaugh and William C Alley now repose in the cemetery on the hill. After 6 months of patient suffering Mr Gaughenbaugh passed away on Friday, July 17, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 15 days, the funeral services being held Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev Amos Fetzer of the Methodist Church, who spoke comforting words with Revelation 14:13 for a text: Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Interment was made in the Prospect Cemetery. Friends of the deceased supply the obituary.
Moses Gaughenbaugh was born near Uniontown, Fayette Co, Penn, on June 2,1825, where he resided until 1846. From there he went to Zanesville, Guernsey Co, Ohio, where he remained ten years and then moved to Centerville, Appanoose Co, Iowa, in 1856, where he was married to Malcina Jones in 1859. He was the father of ten children, six of whom are living and four dead. With his wife and family he came to Nebraska in 1884, where he has since made his home. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for the past forty years.
He enlisted in company 1, 36th Iowa infantry volunteers.

I found Jonathon in the 1830 census for Dunbar, Fayette County, PA.

I found a submitted genealogy that said that Jonathon’s wife was Susan Smith but I can’t verify that.
I found Malsenia in the 1850 census for Caldwell Twp, Appanoose County, IA listed with her parents
Ostine B. Jones 42, born KY
Dianah Jones 39, born KY
Thomas J. Jones 20, born MO
Malsenia 18, born MO
But I think her father’s real name was Austin B. Jones and I doubt if he was living there at the time.
I found Austin B. Jones and Thomas J. Jones with exactly the same first, middle initial, last name, ages and places of birth in the 1850 census for El Dorado County, CA.
I found this entry in the Biographical and Historical Record of Wayne and Appanoose Counties, Iowa to back that up. The year it talks about is 1841
Adolphus Stevens made a claim not far from Wells and Austin Jones also settled near by in the same year. Mr. Stevens still resides on the claim made by him thirty seven years ago. Jones only remained a few years and emigrated to California. It is stated that Jack Klinkenbeard made a claim near Stevens the same year.
And this slightly different version from another Appanoose County history:
The Wells family had no neighbors until Adolphus Stevens and Austin Jones took up claims in the locality in 1841. Stevens stayed, improved his holdings and added to his possessions. He remained on this farm over forty years. Jones was not a stayer and after a few years of roughing it sold out and went to California.
Dinah and Malsenia and the other children were in the 1856 Iowa census in Caldwell Twp, Appanoose County, IA. Dinah listed herself as widowed. I don’t think that’s true and Austin had deserted her.
Dinah divorced Austin in 1858.
