Here's Jacob in the 1880 census in Missouri, living with his mother and his marital status is widowed, so he must have been married previously.

I also found him in the 1856 Iowa Census living with the George W. Bennett family in Poweshiek County. His age is 22, born in Indiana, and he had been in Iowa for 4 years.
