JOHN F. BRYAN, COUNTY PIONEER, DIES OF ILLNESS
Local Resident Came to Appanoose When States Were Involved in War Over Slavery
John F. Bryan, 90, who first came to Appanoose county in 1863 while the states were embroiled in an argument over slavery, died at 2:45 a. m. today.
His death occurred at the home of a brother, J. W. Bryan, at 201 North 21st street. He had been in poor health about two years, and a fall a wek ago, which fractured a bone in his hip, made his condition critical.
The son of George and Sarah Bryan, he was born in Todd county, Kentucky, Sept. 10, 1854, and “pioneered” with his family to Missouri when about 10 years old. He moved to Iowa in 1863, having come to the county, with Centerville only a village, before going to Drakesville in Davis county. He resided at Drakesville until eight years ago, having come then to make his home with his brother.
He never married.
Four brothers and a sister survive: Mrs. Sarah Hoskins of Mystic; Marion Bryan of Walsh, Colo.; Sam Bryan of Tama; and Tom and J. W. Bryan of Centerville.
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church in Drakesville Thursday at 2 p.m. Arrangements will be made for a minister, since the church has none. Burial will be in the cemetery there.

** Some of the numbers don’t add up. If John Bryan was 90 at the time of his death, he could not have been born in 1854. In my family tree, I have his birth year listed as 1846, which matches up with census records.
