Mrs. Mary J. Cole Called to Her Eternal Home This Morning

Mrs. S. S. Cole died this morning at 6:00 o'clock at her home on North Ninth Street. She was aged 56 years, 4 months and 18 days and the cause of her death was perforated peritonitis caused by gall stones from which she had suffered for the last two years. Her serious attack of sickness began on the last day of September and since I that time she has steadily grown worse.

She leaves to mourn their loss a husband and three children. Mrs. Cole's maiden name was Mary J. Haught and she was born on May 23, 1844, near Wheeling, Va., coming to Iowa and to Johns township in this county about the year 1855. Since that time she has been a resident of Appanoose county. In 1864 she was married to S. S. Cole and as a result of this union five children were born, three of whom are living, being O. M. Cole, P. O. Cole and Grace Cole while the two deceased children were Ida and Lester Cole who would have been older than those now living.

Mrs. Cole's mother, Mrs. Samuel Haught, is still living, having made her home for a number of years with her daughter, Mrs. C. P. Cole, of Johns township. Mrs. Cole's other sisters are Mrs. Helen Larue, of Ottumwa, and Mrs. J. G. Meyer, of this city, and her brothers are Mitchell Haught, of Orlando, Okla., and Wilson M. Haught, of Cedar County, Mo.

Mrs. Cole was well known to the people of Centerville and Appanoose county as a woman of many sterling qualities. She was a devoted member of the Methodist church and was conscientious in all her thoughts and work. She has raised to manhood and to womanhood a family of children who occupy prominent social and business position and no better tribute than this could be paid to womankind. As the relatives live at such great distances it has not yet been decided when the funeral services will be held.
