LaFayette Schaeffer, son of David and Lidia (Heistand) Schaeffer, the youngest of 10 children, born May 6th, 1849, in Bellair township, Appanoose County, Iowa, passed from this life on January 5th, 1932, having reached the age of 82 years, 7 months and 29 days.

He was united in marriage to Theresa A. Robinson on Sept. 22nd, 1875. She preceding him to her reward on December 21st, 1910. To this union were born two children, Salem O. and Charlotte V. Schaeffer who died in infancy.

On December 7th, 1922 he again united in marriage to Mary J. Robinson who mourns his departure after nine years of happy union.

His father, Rev. David Schaeffer was a pastor of the United Brethren in Christ up to the time of his death.

Brother LaFayette Schaeffer in his youth found his Savior precious to his life and gave his Master many years of service, being ordained in 1878 to the ministry of the United Brethren in Christ, and served as pastor for 58 years of ordained service, having served the Salem, Pleasant Hill, Selection, Mount Zion, Mystic and other charges as long as his health permitted, having the record of 433 marriages and the funeral services exceeded his marriages, not having kept close records when health forced him from active service.

In the year 1915 this county elected Brother Schaeffer to the House of Representatives. He served two years.

He leaves to mourn his departure his lovable companion, Mary J. Schaeffer, nieces and nephews, also a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted on January 7th at the Christian Church at Walnut City, Iowa, the home of Brother Schaeffer, by Rev. Geo. H. Suenkel of the Moravia United Brethren Church assisted by Rev. Wm. Bainbridge of Centerville, Iowa.

The quartet from the Mystic United Brethren Church composed of Rev. Wm. Bainbridge, Mrs. A. H. Astroth, Mrs. Magdaline Kelly and Mrs. Mae Smith rendered the following selections: "Nearer Still Nearer", and "Above the Bright Blue". Rev. Bainbridge sang a solo entitled "Sometime We Will Understand".

The remains were laid to rest in the Schaeffer Cemetery to await the call of the Master who said " I am the Resurrection and the Life, He that believeth in Me though he were dead, yet shall he live".
