John J. Irwin, son of James Harvey Irwin and Margaret Shivlar, was born in Emden, Illinois, on April 18, 1876, and departed this life July 13.1961, at his home at 316 N. 3rd St., in Seymour, Iowa.His early life was spent in Illinois. He united in marriage with Cora Nutterfield July 3, 1900. In 1911 they came to Iowa and purchased a farm where they lived 47 years.
Three children were born to this union, Melville H., of Des Moines, Harvey Milton of Rock Island, Ill., and Lucille, who passed away in 1909.
He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his wife and sons, four grandchildren, Richard and Jack Irwin of Des Moines, Myra Olmstead of Altoona and Michael Irwin of Rock Island, and 11 great-grandchildren. Also one sister, Julie Guthre of Peoria,Ill., and several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife and loved ones who did everything loving hands could do to make him comfortable these last three years. He united with the Beulah Baptist church in 1916. Mr. Irwin and his wife retired from the farm north of Plano three and one-half years ago and have made their home in Seymour the last three years and observed their 61st wedding anniversary.
He was preceded in death by his six brothers and five sisters.
With the Rev. W. M. Cleeton officiating, funeral services were held July 16 at the Liggett's Funeral home in Seymour.
He was laid to rest in the family lot at Southlawn cemetery. Pallbearers were Ashel Cozad, Jackie Irwin, Michael Irwin, Oswald Irwin, Lewis Curtis and Mansell Tarbell.
