Dies Suddenly

John Hastings Curtis, 72, died at his home at 617 North 7th St., Monday evening, July 18, about 5:30 p.m., of a heart attack. Mr. Curtis always ate dinner with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gavin, and when he did not arrive at the Gavin home at the usual time, they went to the house. There they found that he had died very suddenly while sitting in a chair on the back porch.
Mr. Curtis was born in Independence Township in this county September 2, 1876, the son of George and Anna Curtis. He had always lived in the northwest part of the county, where he was a prominent farmer and citizen, until he retired and moved to Centerville in 1940.
He had been in poor health for the past four months and during that time, had gone through the Clinic at the University Hospital in Iowa City. He was thought to have been in his usual health.
Surviving are four children, Mrs. Earl Gavin of Centerville, Mrs. Rex Wells of Piano rural route , George Curtis of Melrose, and Lewis Curtis of Mystic rural route . Ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. His wife, Abbie Nora Curtis, preceded him in death November 7, 1945.
