Centerville Citizen
December 4, 1895

A PIONEER GONE.

Mr. Abner Stark, an old Settler,
Passes to his Reward.

The death of Mr. Abner Stark removes another honored name from the roll of Appanoose's earliest settlers.
His death occured on Saturday afternoon, at his home in Oak Park, and the remains were taken to-day from his home in Centerville to the Philadelphia church in Johns township, the interment occuring from that place this morning,
Mr. Stark is one of Appanoose's oldest settlers and was in the neighborhood of the age of 55 years. Nearly all of his life he lived on a farm in Walnut township near Garfield and by his industry and frugality he had become one of the county’s well-to-do farmers.
About three years ago he gave up his farm and moved to Bloomfield to give his children the benefit of a normal school training. Living in that city but a year he finally returned to Appanoose county, coming to Centerville and purchasing a home in Oak Park.
He was a strong, robust, healthy man and of late years his appearance gave no evidence of the gradual breaking down of his system. The past several years however he has suffered from Brights disease and heart trouble, and for two months he had been confined to the house, his illness culminating in his death Saturday. Mr. Stark was a prominent member of the Christian Church and it was mainly through his energy that the Philadelphia church in Johns township was erected and it was his financial aid that sustained it. He was a good citizen and in politics was a staunch re publican.
