Mary Paton Laurie, daughter of John and Mary Paton, was born at Dunferline, Fifeshire, Scotland, December 9, 1854, and died in Mystic, Iowa at the home of her son, William Laurie October 31, 1948, at 9:15 p.m. She had reached the advanced age of 93 years, 10 months and 22 days, being considered Mystic’s oldest resident and one of the oldest women in the county.

On December 31, 1874 she was married to Peter Laurie and out of this union were born 10 children: James and Mary who died in infancy, John, of Burlington; Henry of Buffalo, Wyo.; William of Mystic; Mrs. Ellen Lowther, of West Union; Mrs. Annie Bollman, of Rock Island, Ill.; James, deceased; Robert of Mason City, and Marinnie May, deceased.

With her husband and two children she came to this country June 12, 1882 an (sic) settled in Erwin, Pa., where the family remained for about four years. From there she moved to Seymour, Iowa, and spent the balance of her life in Seymour and Mystic. She came to Mystic in 1921 making her home with her son, William with whom she remained until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband an (sic) the four children previously mentione (sic).
She is survived by the six children mentioned above, 25 grandchildren, over 30 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Laurie was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She was a loving mother and loyal wife. Although for a good many years she was almost a total invalid she was a patient sufferer and bore her cross without complaint. She was gifted with a typical Scotch sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Mystic Methodist church with its pastor, Rev. M. R. Gonzalez, in charge. The following requested songs: “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beauitiful Isle” were sung by a trio composed of Mrs. Clementine Young, Mrs. Frances Bradwell, and Ernest Massey.

Interment was in Highland Cemetery by the side of her husband.
