E. J. Beard of 512 W. Jackson St. Centerville, passed away Friday, January 26, 1962 at 9:45 p.m. in the St Joseph Hospital, where he had been since August 19, 1961. He was 77 years, 10 months and four days old at the time of his death.
Elijah Jefferson Beard was born March 22, 1884 near Exline the son of Elisha and Mary Cassady Beard. He was married to Essie Maring on October 8, 1907, who survives.
Also surviving are five children, Mrs. H. J. Zink of Kincheloe Air Base, Michigan, Mrs. Louis Schnable of Tokyo, Japan, Mrs. Harold Coons of Ogden, Utah, Mrs. G. G. Gibson of Colombo, Caylon, and J. Woodward Beard of Des Moines, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lee and Jesse.
For years Mr. Beard formed in Appanoose County being a past president of the Farm Bureau. He moved to Ames, Iowa in 1925, where he was employed with the Highway Commission until 1951, when he retired. He was a member of the Drake
Ave. Christian Church, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 29, 1962 at 11 a.m. from the Johnson Funeral Home. Rev. G. A. Sheils officiated and Masonic Lodge rites were held. Burial was in the Exline Cemetery.
