I am seeking information about members of the Sarah Brophy family (my great great great grandmother ) that lived in Harper’s Ferry from about 1854 til the end of the 19th century.
A quick bio:
Sarah moved from Cumberland, Maryland with her eight children after the death of her husband Thomas (1853). The family had a farm outside Harper’s Ferry (just north of Whippoorwill Hollow) adjacent to the farm of Michael Degnan (Degnam?), who I have reason to believe was Sarah’s brother. She remained at that location (widowed) until the mid-1890’s when she moved to Chicago to live with her daughter, passing in 1896. She’s buried at Paint Rock Cemetery. Listed below are the sibling’s. I have quite a bit of info about the women in the family but the men seem to be the most difficult to discover anything about.John B. Brophy (b. about 1838): seems to have moved West at some point but lost track of path.
Mary M . Brophy (Callahan): my great great grandmother. Buried at St. Josephs, New Albin. Mother to Frances Callahan (Ayer).
Catherine Brophy (Toole): lived in Chicago until passing in 1924.
Patrick Brophy (b. about 1844): Buried at Paint Rock cemetery. Possibly married out west? Children?
Thomas Brophy (b. about 1847): records seem to show him marrying Mary Sweeney, but I don’t think it’s the same Thomas Brophy.
James Brophy (b. about 1850): records show him possibly marrying Mary Brazell in 1870 and having three children. Disappears into history before 1880.
Sarah Ellen Brophy (Nolan): Buried at Paint Rock cemetery. Lived in Chicago until passing in 1907.
Joseph Brophy (b. about 1853): I believe is buried at Paint Rock. Trail ends after about 1890.
That’s everyone. There seems to be many Brophy’s in the Harper’s Ferry/Lansing area but one of the distinguishing characteristics about all of the above is that they were all born in Cumberland, Maryland. So if that rings a bell with anyone please pass along any info you might have.
Thanks a lot!
