Hi Judy,
There are no 'official' birth or death records in Allamakee county until 1880, and even then the records have large gaps in the reporting. Marriage records for Allamakee county date back to 1849.

Unofficial records (christenings, baptism, funeral, burial records) can sometimes be found if you know the church your Johnson family members attended, and IF those church records are extant. Otherwise you'll need to look for the occasional newspaper notices of births, death notices or obits, family Bible entries, census records, gravestone inscriptions, draft registration records, etc. to document the birth or death date of a person.

Copies of the original Vital Record documents after 1880 for Allamakee can be obtained at the Iowa Vital Records Bureau.

Don't overlook the Allamakee co. IAGenWeb site for a great many vital records from original documents, newspapers and church records.
