In Response To: 1853 resources (CATHY CARLYLE)

The link to the Allamakee co. IAGenWeb site is below. In the miscellaneous history section you'll find a list of Allamakee county newspapers & their dates of existence. In the Death Records section are links to the various death records we have on the website, including the cemetery records where you can browse the cemeteries looking for early death dates. The Lansing cemetery (Oak Hill) likely existed in the early 1850's but I don't know the exact date.

Death records were not 'officially' kept in Iowa until 1880, but they are incomplete for many years after that. 'Not reporting' a death became punishable by law in the 1920's. Prior to 1880 you'll have to rely on a newspaper death notice, occasionally an obit, church records, cemetery records, land records, etc.

Obituaries or biographies of family members who died after Thomas, might contain information about him.

1853 is very early in the history & settlement of Allamakee county, it having only been set off from Clayton co. in 1847. Records will be sporatic. Thomas may not have much of a paper-trail if he wasn't in Lansing for very long.
