Am interested in knowing if perhaps this could have been Mrs. Walter Haines

My inquiry is based on the following items
Houston County Journal March 26, 1884
Walter Haines has returned from his last sad visit to his dear departed wife (in 1886 he married Virginia (Jenny) Dunbar)

Feb 27, 1884 - Walter Haines, the present efficient manager of the city dray, called in to have his name registered on our subscription last week. He said he had concluded to make his residence permanent here.

Haines Roy 2 M Minnesota

I searched the 1870
U.S. census at Ancestry.com, for Walter Haines and found him living in
Lansing with his parents J.K. & Cordelia Haines. They were born in New
Hampshire & Maine, respectively. On the 1880 census, he is still with his
parents and unmarried. He is listed as Walter J. You can view the 1880
census for free at www.familysearch.org

On the 1885 Iowa State census (Ancestry.com), I no longer find Walter Haines
(born 1861) anywhere in Iowa. His parents are still in Lansing. Of
course this doesn't mean he died, since he could have moved out of state.

On 1900 U.S. census at Ancestry.com there is a Walter Haines (born in Iowa
May 1860) found in North Dakota. He is shown as married 13 years, and his
parents born in N.H., occupation is carpenter. He's living in a hotel. His
wife is not with him. Jumping to the 1920 U.S. census: Caledonia, Houston
co. MN there is a Walter Haines, age 57 or 59) b. Iowa, father b. Mass,
mother b. Maine; occupation carpenter. With him are wife Virginia and a
grandson Arthur, age 15, born in N.D.

So, IF these census records are all for the same Walter Haines ... it is
very possible that he married between 1880 and 1884, and that this 1st wife
died in 1884 and is actually the person buried in the Oak Hill grave.
'Woodmansee' is known to contain errors. The gravestone may actually read
Name, wife of Walter Haines 1861- Mar 18, 1884 .... but I have no way of
knowing without viewing the stone.

Should you post a query, you are welcome to include the census info. I found for you.

Good luck with your research!
