Forrest Sires was my maternal grandfather

Forrest Daniel “Frosty” Sires, 88, of New Albin, Iowa, died Monday, January 2, 2006, at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 5 at the New Albin Community Center in New Albin, with Pastor James Olsen officiating. Burial was in New Albin City Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Forrest Daniel “Frosty” Sires was born December 7, 1917, in Dorchester, Iowa, the son of James and Sarah (Hahn) Sires. He received Jesus Christ as a young man and dedicated his life to the Lord. Frosty graduated from New Albin High School in 1936.

September 27, 1940, he married Virginia “Gina” Gladys Roeber in Waverly, Iowa. Frosty and Virginia lived in New Albin until 1943 when they moved to Tulare, S.D., where they farmed for several years.

They moved back to New Albin in 1970 where Frosty worked for the city until his retirement. He taught Sunday School in Tulare and in the New Albin area for several years.

Frosty enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. He liked music, playing his guitar, and singing at church. For many years he also sang for funerals and at several area nursing homes.

Survivors include his children, Barry (Sue) of Tulare, S.D., Karen Lee of New Albin, and Lanette (Jim) Herrmann of Onalaska, Wis.; five grandchildren, Shauna (Richard) Woodward of Tulare, SD, Errin (Brad) Wilker of Castalia, IA, Heather (Paul) Lenz of New Albin, IA, Stephanie (Chris) Ahles of New Albin, IA, and Dustin Herrmann of Onalaska, WI; seven great-grandchildren, Shelby and Caitlin Woodward of Tulare, SD, Bretton and Brandon Wilker of Castalia, IA, and Aubrie, Ashton and Evan Lenz of New Albin, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Virginia, who died in 1998; four brothers, Donald, Alvin “Bud”, Raymond “Tat”, and Cleon; and three sisters, Ruby Middendorf, Mae Crowley, and Genevieve Grahlman.

Honorary casket bearers were Donald, Lynn, Jan, Doug, Lance, and Joel Sires. Casket bearers were Dustin Herrmann, Paul Lenz, Brad Wilker, Chris Ahles, Bob Grahlman, and Jim “Gus” Sires.
