June 1941
Gerhardt Middendorf was my great-great maternal grandfather. The many friends of George Middendorf were grieved to learn of his death which occurred at his home here Saturday morning, June 28, 1941. The end came peacefully after several months illness, the Angel of Death severing the threads of life as a fitting reward for a long and devoted Christian life.
Deceased was born in Shale, Germany, December 26, 1851, and was the son of Lambert and Johannah (Muntz) Middendorf. Mr. Middendorf was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Welper at Eitzen, Minnesota, June 8, 1885, settling on a farm in Houston County, Minnesota, not far from New Albin where many years were spent. They were the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living, namely, Edward and Walter of New Albin, Frank of Lansing, George of Caledonia, MN, Mrs. Lewis (Rosina) Roeber and Mrs. Martin (Alvina) Roeber of Tulare, SD, Elmer at home, and Mrs. Herman (Ella) Muenckel of Caledonia, MN. Besides the above children two sisters, Mrs. Ricka Krueger and Mrs. Lizzie Burmester of Lyon, NE, 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren mourn his passing. His wife preceded him in death November 27, 1922; also one child.
During his active life on the farm Mr. Middendorf was a fine neighbor and friend. He was also a loving and devoted husband and father.
About 22 years ago, in 1919, he retired, moving to New Albin and since then had become one of its most familiar and respected citizens.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at St. Peter's Evangelical and reformed church with the Rev. E.J. Florin, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the New Albin cemetery and carrying his mortal remains to its final resting place were Oscar Lenz, Peter Metzdorf, Otto Meyer, Pat Burke, John LaTronche and Ed Barry.
