Funeral services for Sam Curnow were held Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Kathryn Campbell, Church of the Savior, Clermont, Iowa, officiated. Father E. R. Sims of Prairie du Chien, WI, participated in giving the Sermon. The organist was Marian Schutte and the soloist was Kim Schutte. The Casket Bearers were: Kendall Curnow, Kory Curnow, Travis Curnow, Jim Van Roseum, Ryan Duffy, and Andy Maurer. The Honorary Casket Bearer was Tanner Curnow. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery with Military Honors by the 389th Engineer Battalion. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Samuel John Curnow was born May 3, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Samuel George and Lois (Cramblit) Curnow. He passed away Thursday, December 15, 2005, at his home in Postville, Iowa at the age of 75 years.
He was baptized and confirmed in St. Marks Episcopal Church at Des Moines, Iowa.
Sam attended Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He then graduated from Drake College in Des Moines.
Sam served in Korea in the Army and made Sergeant. On returning home, he took a position at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, working for the VFW as a Service Officer from 1955 to 1967. He joined the Army Reserve in the 410th Infantry Battalion. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 30 years of service.
On June 30, 1956 Sam and Marilyn Jean Rose were married in the Episcopal Church in Iowa City. To this union four children were born, Sam, John, Mark, and Kathryn.
In 1967 the family moved to Postville, where Sam accepted the position as Administrator at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville and Central Community Hospital at Elkader, Iowa.
Sam’s interests included books on military history and sharing stories with friends of like interests, and his collection of records, which included classical, John Philip Sousa marches and music from the Big Band era.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, three sons and a daughter, and seven grandchildren, Sam and Laurie Curnow, their children, Karie, Kendall, and Kory, of Chanhassen, MN, John Curnow, Carol Alcober and his son, Tanner, of Ft. Meyers, FL, Mark and Deann Curnow, and their children, Travis and Kalie, of Prior Lake, MN, Kathryn and Jim Van Rossum and their son, Sam, of Truro, IA.
He is also survived by his sister, Agnesan Treen, Elbie, WA, and nieces and nephews, Laura, Teresa, and David.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Frank Curnow, who died in infancy.
Sam was a member of the Church of the Savior in Clermont and Trinity Episcopal Church in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
