MICHAEL W. BECK - died 1928

"In the midst of life we are in death." This was brought vividly to the minds of the few people in the court room shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, says the Waukon Journal, when Michael W. Beck, a lifelong and highly esteemed resident of northeast Makee township, was overtaken by death while answering questions as a witness. The deceased was testifying in the case of Charles F. Deeney vs. John C. Johnson, a controversy in regard to boundary lines. Ellison Orr, appointed by the court as commissioner, was hearing the evidence. Mr. Beck had answered four or five questions asked him by Attorney Acres of Decorah when he collapsed in the witness chair and breathed his last. There were only a few in the room at the time, but they made efforts to resuscitate him while awaiting the arrival of a physician who had been sent for. He continued the efforts, but without avail.
