Sincere sorrow was expressed by Waukon folks Saturday upon being apprised of the death that morning of Jos. Haines of this city at a hospital in Madison, Wis., where he went several weeks ago and had undergone an operation for kidney trouble which his impaired health could not withstand, says the Waukon Democrat. Joe Haines was regarded as one of Waukon's most substantial citizens, he being a man of honor and integrity in all of his dealings during a residence here of close to 50 years. He was active in promoting Waukon's welfare and became an extensive owner of business and residence properties, which he handled attentively and profitably. He served the city both as councilman and mayor and proved a reliable and capable official. Deceased was past 77 years of age, having been born of English parentage on Dec. 22, 1850 at Brooklyn, N. Y.
