TWO KILLED IN COLLISION NEAR PRAIRIE
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI-A head-on crash early Sunday on Highway 35, a mile north of here, brought death to two persons and critical injuries to two others, according to Crawford County Sheriff Harry Shedivy.Mrs. Ray (Alice) Sweeney, 40, Dubuque, was killed instantly, and Kenneth Toberman, 20, Prairie du Chien, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday in a Prairie du Chien hospital.
Mrs. Sweeney was a passenger in a car driven by Earl Bemin, 43, Dubuque, going north. The car collided with the southbound car driven by Toberman, with Jerry Wainwright, 19, Prairie du Chien, as his passenger.
Bemin received serious chest injuries, a broken arm, and body cuts and bruises.
Wainwright sustained a compound skull fracture, broken left arm, and broken thigh, according to Sheriff Shedivy.
Shedivy said the two fatalities were the ninth and 10th in Crawford County this year. The accident happened only about 100 yards from where the eighth highway death occurred 10 days ago.
Investigating along with Shedivy were county officers, Alvin Crogan, Fred Brockway, Donald Eastman and Andrew Novak, assisted by Prairie du Chien city police, who helped to take the injured to the hospital.
Services for Mrs. Sweeney will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Richard Hintgen officiating, and burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends were asked to call after 7 p.m. Monday at Burke Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her husband; one daughter, Sharon, and one son, Dennis, both at home; her mother, Mrs. Vi Clancy of Lansing; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Erickson of Chicago, and Mrs. Irene Baker and Edna Clancy, both of Dubuque, and Mrs. Myron Reppe of Lansing; and three brothers, Walter Clancy of Lansing, and George and Don of Otis, OR.
