Joseph B. Olsen

Joseph B. Olsen, 78, of Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Ill., formerly of 1693 Garfield Ave., Dubuque, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, following a battle with dementia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Olsen worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 31 years.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1925, in Lansing, Iowa, son of Berger and Jeanette (Johnson) Olsen. He married Arlene Hook on May 4, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Waukon, Iowa; she preceded him in death on July 25, 1997.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Philippines and receiving the rank of sergeant T4.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are seven children, Ronald (Shelby) Olsen, Gerald (Kathy) Olsen, Susan (James) Denlinger, Randy (Kimberly) Olsen, Linda (Gerald) Decker, Jean (Ronald) Heim and Ann Olsen, all of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Jon and Fay Olsen, Ricky (girlfriend, Christine) Olsen, Jason (Bertha) Denlinger, Julie (boyfriend, Drew) Denlinger, Matthew Decker and Justin Heim, all of Dubuque; and seven siblings, Mildred Bectel, of Lansing, Elmer (Charlotte) Olsen and Eleanora (Gene) Thorpe, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Alfred (Florence) Olsen and Harvey Olsen, both of Waukon, Leroy (Shirley) Olsen, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and James (Jan) Olsen, of Lowden, Iowa.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Floyd Olsen, in 1986.

A Joseph B. Olsen Memorial Fund has been established.

The Olsen family wishes to thank Dr. Bagby and his staff and also the staffs at Stonehill Care Center, Big Meadows Nursing Home and The Finley Hospital for all their help in taking care of our father.
