Mrs. Fred J. Landt, nee Elsie Sophia Kluss, the daughter of Henry Kluss and Elizabeth Garms Kluss, was born in Allamakee county on July 19, 1888. She was baptized in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on Nov. 24, 1888 and confirmed on March 23, 1902. She remained active in the life of the Church throughout her life. She died at the Community Memorial Hospital on March 18, 1961, at the age of 72 years, seven months and 28 days. She had been hospitalized as the result of injuries received from serious burning.

She was married to Fred J. Landt on February 15, 1907. Following their marriage, they farmed for 29 years on a farm south of Luana. They then moved to Luana, where they lived for seven years, moving to Postville in 1942. One son, Harry, was born to this union.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, just one month ago; one sister, Lizzie, Mrs. Fred Dahms of Postville; one brother, George, of Postville.

She is survived by her son, Harry, of Postville; one grandson; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Emil Kluss, of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Brandt of Decorah; and Malinda, Mrs. Gene Hawkins of El Monte, California, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on March 21, at 2:00 p.m., with the pastor, the Rev. Charles E. Witt, officiating. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Postville Woman Dies of Burns
POSTVILLE, Ia. - A 72-year-old Postville woman died at 4 a.m. Saturday of burns she received when her clothing caught fire at her home here Friday.

Mrs. Fred Landt, a widow was burning papers in her basement when the flames ignited her clothing. She managed to get upstairs to the telephone and called her son, Harry. He summoned an ambulance which rushed the woman to the Postville Hospital.

She suffered second and third degree burns over most of her body.

Services are pending at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville.
