George Bernhardt, Former Mail Carrier, Passes Away Monday

George F. Bernhardt, 80, passed away Monday evening at Decorah, where he had moved the week before to make his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Harvey. He had been in failing health for the past year or more.

Funeral services will be held at the Schutte Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and interment will be in the Postville cemetery.

Mr. Bernhardt was born near Watson on August 24, 1864, and as a young man followed farming south of Luana.

He was married to Jessie Anderson on February 16, 1892, and to them were born three daughters and one son. Mrs. Bernhardt passed away July 7 of last year. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary here in February, 1942.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernhardt first lived on their farm south of Luana four years, then moved to the Campbell farm west of Postville. Later they operated a farm north of Castalia and when the children arrived at school age they moved to Castalia.

Mr. Bernhardt became the carrier on the new rural mail route two at Castalia when it was established and served it for 26 years. They moved to Postville 15 years [ago] when he retired from the mail service and this had been his home since except for 18 months when he and Mrs. Bernhardt lived at Decorah.

The surviving children are Mrs. H.S. (Carrie) Steele of Elgin, who lived here with her father from the time of Mrs. Bernhardt's passing on until he moved to Decorah last week; Mrs. C.K. (Hazel) West of Dubuque; Mrs. Floyd (Rilla) Harvey of Decorah; and Harold Bernhardt of San Diego, Calif. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
