Mrs. Geo. Bernhardt Passes Away Friday After Short Illness
Had Lived Here as Girl and Past Few Years; Funeral Held Sunday

Mrs. George Bernhardt, 79, a resident of Postville for the past several years, passed away at her home last Friday following a several months' illness.

Funeral services were conducted from the Schutte Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Lehr Newhouse officiating and interment was in Postville cemetery.

Jessie Mae Anderson was born at McGregor on June 12, 1865, the daughter of John and Ann Anderson and moved with her parents to Postville where she spent all of her early years.

She was united in marriage to George Bernhardt of Luana on February 16, 1892, and to this union were born three daughters and one son, Mrs. H.S. Steele (Carrie) of Elgin, Mrs. C.K. West (Hazel) of Dubuque, Mrs. F.J. Harvey (Rilla) of Decorah, and Harold of San Diego, Calif., all of whom together with the husband survive her. There are also surviving ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Her parents, brothers and sisters and one granddaughter, Margy West, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bernhardt was a charter member of the Degree of Honor Lodge which was organized at Castalia in 1906 and she remained a member until her passing. She served as Chief of Honor for two years while the lodge was still active and also held other offices at various times. Most of her life was spent at Castalia where she was a member of the M.E. church. Upon coming to Postville she affiliated with the Community Presbyterian church.

Postville, Ia.-Special: Funeral services for Mrs. George Barnhard, 79, who died at her home here Wednesday after an illness of several weeks, were held at the Schutte Funeral Home Sunday afternoon. The Rev. L. H. Newhouse, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

She was born Jessie Mae Anderson, daughter of John and Ann Monroe Anderson, on June 12, 1865 at McGregor, Ia. She was married to George Barnhard, and for many years the couple lived at Castalia, where Mr. Barnhard was a rural mail carrier. They then lived at Postville and Decorah before returning to Postville, where they lived the past several years.

Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Steele, of Elgin, Ia.; Mrs. Hazel West, of Dubuque, Ia., and Mrs. Rilla Harvey of Decorah; one son, Harold, in California; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
