Dr. L. N. Heike

Dr. L. N. Heike, 85, of Waukon died Friday, May 3, 2013 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. A Memorial Service will be held to honor Dr. Heike Saturday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.
Dr. Leon “Doc” Norbert Heike was born September 1, 1927 in Medford, WI, the son of Paul John Andrew and Agnes (Kleeman) Heike. Doc graduated from high school in Shawano, WI and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was stationed in Japan. After being honorably discharged in 1947, he attended and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport.
July 1, 1956, Doc married Marian Bittinger in Spencer. He practiced in Storm Lake and Laurens before moving to Waukon in 1967. Doc owned and operated Waukon Chiropractic Center until he retired in 1992.
Doc was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon. On the family farm, he raised over 100 registered Paint and Quarter horses. Doc put on rodeos at their farm on West Ridge called the Triple H (Heike’s Hilly Haven) in Waukon; he furnished his own livestock. Rodeos were also held in the surrounding area, including the Allamakee County Fair for two years. In addition, the horse stock and some bulls performed with Bob Barnes Rodeo.
Doc liked to hunt, fish and play cards. He loved to spend time at their cabin in northern Wisconsin; the cabin had special meaning to him as the property had been bought by his family in the 1930s and the cabin was built during WW II.
Doc is survived by Marian, his wife of nearly 57 years; three daughters, Diana Dudley of Granbury, TX, and Val Heike and Ellen Mathis, both of Waukon; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Rohr of Waukesha, WI; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman.
Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is in charge of arrangements.
