Postville Herald, Thursday, 4 February 1937.

John J. Dunlevy, 83, dean of Allamakee newspapermen and perhaps the oldest active editor in the entire state, passed away at his home in Lansing last Wednesday evening. Mr. Dunlevy, in partnership with his brother, Tom, of Waukon, had been the publisher of the Allamakee Journal at Lansing for the past 58 years and had absorbed other newspapers in Lansing and New Albin to make one of the best country weeklies in the state.

Born in Illinois in 1854, as a boy he accompanied his parents to Texas. During the Civil War the family moved to New Orleans where John was a newsboy until his family fled to the northern states and arrived in Lansing in 1864. Having had private instruction from his stepmother, Mr. Dunlevy, at the age of 11 years, took the county teachers examination in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and received a teachers certificate. He at once took to teaching, some of his students being much older than he, and then returned to Lansing, where he learned the printers trade which he continued to follow until his passing.

John J. Dunlevy filled many positions of trust and public office, including postmaster of Lansing from March 1, 1914 to March 3, 1923, deputy sheriff of Allamakee county, mayor of Lansing for several terms, and for many years a member of the city council. He took vigorous interest in politics and civic affairs and was an active Democrat all his life, spreading the gospel of his party by means of his facile pen through the columns of his paper for over a half century. He was Allamakee county's delegate to the Liquor Repeal convention at Des Moines and was Democratic County Chairman at the time of his death. He also attended many county, state and national conventions for over half a century.

His wife and three infant sons, the former dying September 5, 1933, preceded him in death. Mr. Dunlevy is survived by one brother, Thos. F., of Waukon; a sister, Mrs. Alex Zoll, of Chicago; and eight children: Richard A., Mark F. and Mary A. at home, John W., of Dubuque; M. J., Omaha, Neb., Dr. G. R. Dunlevy, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Wallace O'Connor, Sacred Heart, Minn., and Mrs. Leo Jarvis, of Minneapolis. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
