Postville Herald, Thursday, 4 Feb. 1937.
The passing of Mrs. Christoph Sander at her home in this city on Wednesday evening, January 27th, brought to a close the life of a loved and loving mother and a splendid christian woman, and brought a pang of sorrow to the hearts of all who knew this estimable lady, who for many years had been a resident of this city and community.
At the time of her passing she was aged 77 years, 11 months and 27 days, and during her latest illness she was ministered to by her daughters with tender loving care.
Her maiden name was Caroline Doris Schultz, and she was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on January 30, 1859. At the age of five years she came to America with her parents, the journey across the Atlantic being made by sail boat, requiring a tedious trip of many weeks. The family at first made their home at Guttenberg and later moved to this community.
On April 16, 1875, she was united in marriage with Christoph Sander, and their wedded life extended over a period of 55 years, the husband passing on July 5, 1930. Their union was blessed by eleven children, two of whom preceded her in death.
For about 45 years the family lived on their farm near Postville, retiring from active farm life in 1920, and moving to this city, where they spent the remainder of their earthly days.
She was a faithful wife and loving mother, a communicant member of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city, and greatly enjoyed attending the German services so long as her health permitted.
She leaves to mourn nine children, all of this city; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city last Sunday afternoon, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating, and the large congregation in attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings all testified to the high place she held in the hearts and homes of those who had known her for upwards of half a century. Interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery.
