On Wednesday morning May 11, 1904, occurred the death of Mrs. J.P. Downs, who resides about five miles south of Emmetsburg in Great Oak township.
Something hear a week previous to her death Mrs. Downs was taken with pneumonia and despite the best of care and medical attendance she passed away. Her death is peculiarly sad in that she leaves a family of seven children, all of whom need the watchful care of a mother.
The family consists of four sons and three daughters, the eldest of which is 17 years of age and the youngest is a little babe of three months.
The deceased's maiden name was Katherine Finnegan, and she was born in Allamakee county, Iowa, September 8, 1866, where she grew to womanhood. In October, 1885, she was united in marriage to Mr. J.P. Downs and they immediately came to Palo Alto county and settled on a farm in Great Oak township, where they have continued to reside.
Mrs. Downs was a woman of admirable character and was universally loved and respected. She was a splendid mother and the saddest part is that her little children are this early in life deprived of her motherly care and admonition. She was a conscientious Christian woman and leaves behind her only memories of good deeds and noble actions.
Besides her husband and seven children, she leaves a mother and two brothers in Allamakee county and a brother in Colorado. The three former arrived on Thursday to be present at the funeral. The funeral will take place Friday at 10 o'clock from Assumption church. The husband and little children and other relatives certainly have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
