A message yesterday conveyed to Postville relatives the sad news of the death in Hartford, S.D., of Mrs. Chris Petrie, a former well known resident of this locality. The body will arrive in Postville tonight on Milwaukee train No. 8 and the funeral will be held from the Lutheran church in this city at 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

Richard O.: there is a "Marie C. Petrie "who died 1915 Mar 03 in the South Dakota Death Index. However there is no age listed for her.

Sharyl: The family appears to have used the spelling Petrie most often, but Chris Patre’s gravestone in the Postville cemetery spells the surname as Patre.

The Grand Meadow twp., Clayton co. 1880 census spells their surname Petrie – Christ A. (b. ca1847) and Mary (b. ca 1848) & children Sophia, John & Willie.

Ads for the sale of the Chris Petrie farm in Grand Meadow appear in the Postville Review in 1914 before this appeared in the paper: “M.J. Hurley has bought the Wm. Petrie farm for $97 per acre. The Petrie family will move to Hartford, South Dakota, March 1.”

I suspect that their daughter Sophia also moved to S.D. and that her mother went there to live after the husband Christ died in 1903. Mrs. Petrie may not have a gravestone or her inscription is on the other side of Christ’s & I didn’t see it when I took the photo of his gravestone. If all of their children moved to S.D. no monument may have been erected.

Chris Patre and Chris Petrie are the same man. The S.D. death record is more likely than not, to be for his wife Marie/Mary, as is this death notice.
