Betty Ann Shafer

Betty Ann Shafer, 73, of Postville, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon of cancer. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 9 at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville, IA, with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Betty Ann (Folsom) Shafer was born December 10, 1927 on the rural Postville farm of her parents, Lloyd Milo and Alice (Meier) Folsom. She attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Postville High School. Betty taught country school for several years. On June 12, 1948 she married Ralph Lloyd Shafer at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville. They farmed together in Ludlow Township until retiring in 1990. Following that, Betty worked for the IOCO Service Station and Quillins Food Ranch in Waukon.

She was an active member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church formerly serving as an Elder and a member of Ladies Aid. She loved to garden and raise flowers and was known for her beautiful roses. Betty enjoyed the rural life and spent time canning, cooking, baking, and working with the chickens on the farm. She was an accomplished seamstress and did crocheting. She was also an avid sports fan and in recent years had enjoyed collecting angels.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Ralph. Survivors include 3 sons, Dennis (Barbara McRae) Shafer of Winona, MN, Dale (Deborah) Shafer of Monona, and Lyle Shafer of Postville; daughter, Brenda Shafer of Dorchester; 2 grandchildren, Stacey and Tiffany Shafer; a daughter-like friend, Joy Kloke and her daughter Alexa of Waukon; 2 sisters, Jean Berge of Waukon and Patsy Kerndt of Lansing; 2 brothers, Charles (Pearl) Folsom of Waukon and Roland (Irene) Folsom of Cresco; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Doubek of Waukon.

Casket bearers were Lynn, Leo and Clark Folsom, Brand Kerndt and Neil and Gayle Evans.
