Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Shafer were held Thursday, February 3, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural, Postville, Iowa. The Rev. James Walker officiated. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Ada Esther Shafer, the oldest child of Fred and Lydia (Stock) Adam, was born June 26, 1906 on the family farm in Ludlow township, Allamakee County, north of Postville, Iowa. She passed away Monday afternoon, January 31, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 5 days.
She was baptized July 22, 1906 by the Rev. F. W. Engelke and confirmed May 25, 1919 by the Rev. Jacob Ratz. Ada attended the rural schools of Ludlow Township.
On February 24, 1927 Ada was married to Edward Arthur Shafer by the Rev. G. K. Widmayer at the home of her parents in Ludlow. To this union a daughter, Jean, was born. Ada spent her entire life within a one mile radius of Ludlow Township.
She helped her parents with the farm work, including planting corn with a plow pulled by horses. She was also there to help with the housework and caring for her younger brothers.
Ada loved the outdoors, taking care of the flowers and planting and harvesting her garden, freezing the produce even as late as this fall.
Ada learned to tat and crocheted by looking at pictures. She made doilies and scarves as gifts for family and friends. She was a great listener and enjoyed hearing about the family activities such as school, jobs, and other news. Ada liked to make desserts and often brought cream puffs and angel food cakes to family gatherings.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward, who died January 5, 1975, and a brother, Alfred Adam.
Surviving is her daughter, Jean (Leo) Flage, of Postville, Iowa; 2 granddaughters, Pamela (Warner) Smidt, of Platteville, Wisconsin and Karla Flage and friend, Jeff Polfer, of Postville; 6 great grandchildren, Brian Brink, Kristal Brink and Scott Wenger, Kelly Brink, Sarah Smidt, Erin Smidt and Abby Smidt; one great great grandson, Tyler Wenger; one brother, Willard Adam of Postville; and other relatives and many friends.
Ada was a life-time member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church.
Casket bearers were Lyle Guese, David Adam, Warner Smidt, Jeff Polfer, Allen Thornton, and Ben Kiet.
