Ralph Lloyd Shafer
Ralph L. Shafer, 78, of Postville, died Monday, August 14, 2000 at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Friday, August 18, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Ralph Lloyd Shafer was born May 11, 1922 on his parents farm in Ludlow Township, the son of August and Selma (Klein) Shafer. Ralph was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. He attended school at Ludlow #8 and graduated from Waukon High School in 1942. On June 12, 1948 he married Betty Folsom at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. Ralph and Betty farmed his parents home place until they retired in 1990. Ralph lived on his parents farm his entire life. Ralph had several bird feeders and enjoyed feeding, watching and studying birds. He also enjoyed watching all type of wildlife and gardening, taking care of his lawn and the cats. Ralph was a member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Postville; 3 sons, Dennis (Barbara McRae) Shafer of Winona, MN, Dale (Deborah) Shafer of Monona, IA and Lyle Shafer of Postville; daughter, Brenda Shafer of Dorchester, IA; 2 grandchildren, Stacey and Tiffany Shafer and one sister Mildred Doubek of Waukon.
Casket bearers were Lee Folsom, Brad Kerndt, Randy Sweeney, Michael Eberhart and Larry and Gayle Evans.
