James Edward Sheriff, age 83 years passed away Sunday morning at the Good Samaritan home in Waukon where he was being cared for. On July 25 of last year he was taken to Waukon Hospital where he was given medical care for several months then in Jan. 1957 he was taken to the Good Samaritan Home.
Mr. Sheriff was born on Nov. 4th, 1873 in Winnebago Township in Houston county, Minn. and was baptized at Dorchester Catholic Church. He was the son of John William Sheriff and wife (nee Evelina Sherwood).
He grow to manhood in the Dorchester and Waukon area and worked as a day laborer and on May 26, 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Essie Woods at Caledonia, Minn., where they made their home for a time also living at Dorchester and for the past 25 years or more has been a resident of New Albin.
Mrs. Sheriff preceded him in death July 24th, 1945. To this union were born 9 children of whom 6 survive his passing. Namely Leonard, of La Crosse, Wis.; (Orilla) Mrs. Frank Gordon, New Albin; (Pearl) Mrs. Albert Jyrkas of New York Mills, Minn.; (Elaine) Mrs. William Childers, Baraboo, Wis.; William of Ely; (Irma) Mrs. Carl Doubek, Vinton, Ia.; 3 sons Floyd, Howard and Lloyd preceded him in death.
He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, a half brother Joe Reeder of Waukon and a half sister Ferne.
Funeral services will be held Wed. at 1:00 p.m. C.S.T. at Martin Bros. Funeral home and 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, Rev. E.M. De Buhr officiating. Burial will be in Bench Cemetery beside his wife.
Jim as he was known to all his friends and neighbors will be greatly missed by all. He loved to work in gardens and did so for many around New Albin and his hobby was flowers of which he had many. He was a great friend of children who all will miss his friendly gestures. He lived in a small trailer in New Albin where he enjoyed staying and whenever neighbors visited him he inquired about his little home.
God takes the best for reason divine, but memories last till the end of time. Tears shall not darken or shadows dim, the beautiful memories we have of him.
