Aged Grandma Cowan Dies
Waukon papers make announcement of the death of Grandma Cowan Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Raymond, in that place. Years ago in the fifties, the family resided in the neighborhood of the Four Mile House, later removing to Lansing, and a dozen or more years ago she went to live with her children in Waukon. Deceased was very old, about ninety, we think. She leaves several daughters and one son, W. B. Cowan, a former well known resident of this place. We shall print next week a more extended account of this good old lady's life history.
Lansing Mirror 23 Nov. 1900 P 8 C 1

Miss Mary Portess Grant was born April 27th, 1804, on the estate of the Right Hon. Lord Lyndoch, Perthshire, Scotland, where she resided with her parents till the age of 25, at which time she with her parents came to lower Canada. Here at the age of 27 years she was married to Hugh Cowan May 20, 1821. There were born to them nine children, of which two were sons and seven daughters. Mr. Cowan, with his family removed from Allens Corners lower Canada, to Lansing, Allamakee Co., Iowa, in the month of August 1852. Here Mr. Cowan died June 4th 1854. Since 1876 Mrs. Cowan has resided in Waukon and vicinity.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Scotland from about the age of 15 years, joined the Presbyterian church at Lansing, and after removing to Waukon became a member of the C.P. church of this place February, 1885. She loved her church, her children and her friends.
For some time she has been in failing health. Age was causing the sands of time to run rapidly. Suddenly on November 26, at 7:20 p.m. the silver cord was loosed, the golden bowl broken and she was gone.
Two of her children, her youngest son, James, and Mrs. Lizzie Raymond had preceded her to the other world. Those remaining are Mrs. Margaret Jones and Mrs. Jane Haase of Nebraska, Mrs. Anna Jacobus and Mrs. Flora Cooley, of Retreat, Wis., Mrs. Nettie Hegemeier, of Decorah, Mrs. Mary Raymond and W. B. Cowan, of Waukon. She had lived to a ripe old age, being 96 years, 6 months and 29 days old at the time of her death. [Republican.
