Memorial Services for Seaman Arthur Hanson
A Memorial service was held Sunday afternoon at St. John’s Lutheran church for Arthur C. Hanson, navy volunteer with the rank of 1/c mate engineer on the ship Liscombay, whose death is now confirmed by the war department. A year ago he was reported missing in action in the battle for the Gilbert Islands in the southwest Pacific in December 1943.

Many sorrowing friends of the bereaved family attended the services and Rev. P.F. Kjorlaug delivered an appropriate sermon. The church quartette, W.C. Grangaard, C.H. Megorden, Mrs. Jess Toney and Mrs. Ida Smith rendered two hymns. “Come Ye Disconsolate” and “I Know of a Sleep In Jesus Name.” The congregation joined with the choir in singing “God Bless Our Native Land.”

Ralph D. Waters Post who had charge of the services were L.L. Shurtleff, officer of the day; H.A. Peterson, Ludvig Larson, Peter Hendrickson and Leonard O’Brien, color bearers; Al. P. Hummel, bugler; A.G. Smedsrud, family escort. Other Legionnaires in attendance were Otto Gjefle, Paul Bakke, Warren Hayes, W.R. Ryan, Albert Hanson, Carl Johnson, Nels Iverson, Frank Teeling and E.F. Pieper.

Others who deeply mourn his death are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Hanson of Makee township, a brother Emil and two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Haugen and Mrs. Casper Haugen.
